The moment I jump beneath the surface of the ocean in Tonga, everything become silent except for the sound of my own heartbeat.  The water was endless shades of blue, soft sunlight dancing around me like a dream.  I was nervous, excited and completely unaware that my life was about to change in a single moment. Then suddenly, out of the deep blue, a massive humpback whale appeared.  She moved slowly and gracefully, far gentler than something so enormous should be.  Every movement of her tail felt powerful yet peaceful, as if the ocean itself was breathing with her.  When she come closer, unbelievably close, I forgot how to think.  I could only stare and press my shutter button in my camera.  Her eye met mine for a brief second, and it felt strangely emotional, curious, calm, and wise.  I felt so small beside her, yet somehow deeply connected.  There was only me, the endless sea, and this magnificent giant floating beside me.

I want to laugh, cry and smile all at once.  My chest filled with pure happiness and awe.  No photograph or video could ever truly capture that feeling.  The feeling of sharing space with one of the most beautiful creatures on earth.

As the humpback whale slowly disappeared back into the deep ocean, I stayed there for a moment, gratitude in my heart.  It was not just an encounter.  It was magic.
